LENNY DEL GENIO

20* NL Game of the Month.

Guaranteed Pick : Lenny Del Genio

Game: Atlanta Braves at New York Mets Sep 12 2007 7:10PM
Prediction: Atlanta Braves
Reason: Play on the Braves at 7:10 ET. Atlanta pounded the Mets 13-5 on Tuesday but are still 8 1/2 games behind them with 17 games left. The Braves remained five games behind San Diego for the NL wild card lead. Atlanta ace John Smoltz flirted with history the last time he took the mound. Smoltz (13-7, 3.02 ERA) took a no-hitter into the eighth inning in Friday's 7-1 win over Washington before Ronnie Belliard led off the inning with a single on his last pitch of the night. The 40-year-old right-hander, the only pitcher in baseball history with at least 200 wins and 150 saves, has never tossed a no-hitter. He's been "steady as they come" this year while New York's John Maine (14-9, 3.80 ERA) has struggled in the second half. Maine was 10-4 with a 2.71 ERA at the break (team was 12-5 in his starts) but has gone 4-5 with a 5.86 ERA in 11 second-half starts (team is 5-6). All season long, the Mets have been better in his road starts (10-4) than at home (7-7), plus the Mets are minus-$730 in night home games versus right-handers. In John Smoltz, they face one TOUGH right-hander! Atlanta is my 20* NL Game of the Month.

1500♦ NY YANKEES w/MUSSINA over Toronto w/McGowan
I gave you a 1500♦ winner with the Yankees last night, and for all the same reasons I'm riding them again tonight. The Bronx Bombers are tearing it up right now, and their surging momentum will carry them right through another victory in Toronto tonight. Their offense is firing on all cylinders; when A-Rod isn't hitting homers then Giambi and Posada are. Tonight Mike Mussina will take a trip to the mound for the Yankees, who are 4-1 in his last five starts as the listed favorite. Mussina has an incredibel 21-11 career record vs. the Blue Jays. Toronto will counter with Dustin McGowan, who is having a decent season but the Blue Jays have lost four of his last five starts as the listed dog. He will be no match for these fired up Yankees, who have won four of the last five games in Toronto.

1500♦ NY METS w/MAINE over Atlanta w/Smoltz
I respect John Smoltz and give him all the credit this veteran ace for the Atlanta Braves deserves, but I am taking the Mets at home tonight with John Maine on the mound. Smoltz is coming off a dominant start vs. the Nationals, in which he nearly pulled off the no-hitter. But the Mets are a much better team than the Nats, and the Braves are only 1-6 in Smoltz's last 7 starts vs. a better than .500 team. Also, the Braves have won only seven of his last 22 games as the listed underdog. The surging Mets have won eight of their last ten games, and with the 14-9 John Maine heading to the mound for them tonight I expect to see another win. Take the Mets at Shea Stadium in this one.

Money Train..............

20 Dime

BLUE JAYS (With Mussina and McGowan as listed pitchers)
Take the Blue Jays tonight as the small home chalk over the Yankees.
Mike Mussina will start for the Yankees and he has fallen on some serious hard times. The right-hander has given up 21 earned runs over his last 13 1-3 innings. Folks that’s a 14.18 ERA and that’s not going to get the job done against anyone.
Mussina hasn’t started since August 27 and has pitched in only one other game since then, so don’t be surprised if Moose is rusty tonight.
The Blue Jays will send Dustin McGowan to the mound and the right-hander will look to continue his run of quality starts.
The right-hander has allowed three runs or fewer in his last nine starts and has won his last two starts. He has fared well against the Yankees this season, going 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA in two starts.
Take the Blue Jays as Mussina gets rocked again.

5 Dime

PIRATES (With Bush and Gorzelanny as listed pitchers)
Take the Pirates as the home chalk this afternoon over the Brewers.
The Bucs will send Tom Gorzelanny to the mound and he’s been their ace all season long. The left-hander is 14-7 with a 3.48 ERA on the year. He has won five of his last seven starts, allowing two or fewer earned runs in four of those outings.
Gorzelanny is 2-0 in three starts against the Brewers this year.
Milwaukee will counter with Dave Bush and he continues to have an up-and-down season. The right-hander is 1-1 with an 8.78 ERA over his last three outings and really hasn’t had any consistency this year.
The Bucs continue to play with pride down the stretch, so I don’t expect them to roll over against the Brewers when they can still play the role of spoiler.
Take the Pirates for the home win behind Gorzelanny.

Larry Ness' 15* NL Game of the Week (29-10 since Aug 7 / 112-40 this season!)

My 15* play is on the Az D'backs at 10:10 ET. The D'backs had outscored opponents 42-25 in their six-game winning streak but lost last night in San Francisco, 2-1. Tonight, Arizona is counting on Brandon Webb (15-10, 2.91 ERA) to carry them to a series win. Webb saw his 42-inning scoreless streak end in a 3-2 win over the Brewers on August 22 and then stumbled in his next two outings (allowed 10 ERs in 12.1 innings). He did however, bounce back nicely in his last outing, a 4-2 home win over the Cards last Friday (6 IP / 4 hits / 2 ERs). Webb is 8-5 with a 3.12 ERA in 17 career starts versus the Giants. He scattered six hits over seven innings in a 1-0 home win on June 6 in his lone start against them this season, improving to 3-0 with a 2.27 ERA in his five outings against them. The Giants have not done well vs right-handers this year, going 45-56 (minus-$1,245). San Francisco will give the ball to lefty Jonathan Sanchez (1-3, 5.06 ERA), who is coming off his longest career outing. In just his second start this season and the sixth of his two-year career, he allowed three runs and eight hits in seven innings but didn't get a decision in the Giants' 5-4 win over the Dodgers. Sanchez has made 29 relief appearances this season and is hoping he can become a full-time starter. He may change his mind after this game. The D'backs have done well vs left-handers in '07, going 23-16, including 12-7 (plus-$795) on the road. NL Game of the Week 15* Az D'backs.
