ARI: RHP Brandon Webb (17-10, 3.02 ERA) vs. COL: LHP Jeff Francis (17-8, 4.17 ERA)
With every National League playoff spot up for grabs heading into the final three games of the regular season, the possible scenarios are mind-boggling. For Arizona, however its quit simple, if then win this seriesthey will in all likelihood be in the playoffs. Arizonas biggest threat comes from the San Diego Padres who are just one game back in the division, while Colorado would have to sweep Arizona over the next three games and hope the San Diego loses one game for them to get in. Winners of an unbelievable 10 games in a rowit will not be easy for the Diamondbacks to stop the surging Rockies, but an act of God (yesterdays rain, which pushed back the start of Brandon Webb) sets up an almost perfect situational spot of them to take the opening game of this pivotal series. Its not very often we get to use the likes of perennial Cy Young candidate Brandon Webb in the role of an underdog but tonight we have what we are looking for. Webbs 3.02 ERA seems impressive on its own, but he been even more impressive in this exact setting as his ERA in night games decreases to a paltry 2.91, while his ERA in away games is an even more impressive 2.89! Contrast that with the ERA of Colorados Jeff Francis whos ERA actually increases in night settings to 4.88almost 2 runs higher then his counterpart. For all of the accolades Francis has received this season, it should be noted that right-handed batters are still batting a whopping .291 against the left-hander, which is terrible news when you consider that this particular Arizona team has decimated left-handed pitching this season as they are 27-16 +$1,180 in all setting with an offense averaging an impressive 5 runs per game. Even more impressive has been their mark in road/night games against left-handed pitching where they are 8-3 +$630 averaging a staggering 6 runs per game! While Im not ignoring the fact that Colorado won 10 games in a row, 7 of those wins were against a disinterested Dodgers team that is 1-9 over the exact same span. Quit simple, this the the best value play I have seen all season so I am stepping out and making this my one and only game of the Year! Good luck everybody!
Verdict: Arizona 6, Colorado 3
