MEMPHIS
Lay the points with Memphis tonight when they host Marshall.
Once again tragedy has struck one of our institutions of higher learning.
Memphis defensive lineman Taylor Bradford was shot and killed on campus Sunday night, just four days after the Tigers blew a 31-6 halftime lead at Arkansas State and lost 35-31.
Don’t think for a second that emotion won’t have anything to do with tonight’s game. I expect a full, 60-minute effort from the Tigers tonight as they play for their teammate.
The fact that Memphis is playing for the third time in 11 days may have been a detriment had the tragedy not struck. But adrenaline will take over and give the Tigers the necessary momentum to push past Marshall tonight.
The Thundering Herd has been idle since September 22, when they were blown out 40-14 by Cincinnati. Marshall has now lost five consecutive games and they are just 2-4 ATS in their last six lined contests.
The host has won big in the last two meetings, with Memphis winning 26-3 in 2005 and Marshall returning the favor last year, 41-27.
The Thundering Herd is giving up 41.8 ppg and 447.5 ypg, including 263 rushing yards per contest. That should give Memphis a slight advantage tonight, as the Tigers average 153.8 yards on the ground offensively.
Memphis is 9-2 ATS in its last 11 conference home openers, while Marshall is just 10-26-1 ATS as a road dog, including 2-6 ATS as a dog in Conference USA road games.
Lay the small number as Memphis comes through with an emotional win and cover

Prediction: Memphis

Reason: These teams are both struggling. After getting crushed by UCF in their conference opener, the Tigers blew a 31-6 lead last Thursday and lost 35-31 at Arkansas State. That dropped them to 1-3 overall. The Thundering Herd, who will be playing their conference opener, are 0-4, having given up 41.8 points per game. All four losses have been by double-http://www.therxforum.com/images/smilies/digitando.gifs, coming by an average of 23 points. Yes, this is a difficult scheduling situation for the Tigers as they will be playing on a short week and playing their third game in the past 11 days. However, I believe that that they'll have a few significant advantages which will more than compensate for the lack of rest. For starters, they're playing at home. That's noteworthy as Memphis crushed Marshall 26-3 in the lone meeting here, which came in 2005 and because the Thundering Herd are a dismal 2-16-1 ATS their last 19 road games, including 0-4 SU/ATS the last four. Secondly, in addition to being a poor team, the Herd remain extremely banged-up, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. The biggest loss came when junior defensive end Albert McClellan, the C-USA defensive player of the year, suffered a season-ending knee injury in August. Since then, the Herd has lost defensive end John Jacobs, defensive tackle Montel Glasco and safety Aaron Johnson to injuries. Cornerback Zearrick
Matthews finally returned last week after missing a month with a broken arm. In their absence, true freshman Shane Moore stepped up at tackle. However, even he left the field on crutches with a sprained ankle following last week's 40-14 loss at Cincinnati. One of the remaining defensive leaders, middle linebacker Josh Johnson, hobbled off the field with a sprained ankle in the first quarter. He returned later in the game but obviously wasn't the same. The extra gap in between games will help, but not enough. Additionally, the Tigers will have payback on their minds. Last year, at Marshall, they outgained the Thundering Herd by a 469-408 margin (the most yards they got all season) but lost 41-27 due to four turnovers. Even before the injuries had hit Marshall, Memphis brought back significantly more starters from last year. The home team has won by an average of 19 points in this series. While tonight's game figures to be closer, the home team should manage to prevail once again. Consider laying the small number.

1000♦ MEMPHIS TIGERS
Bottom line in this one is that Marshall is a lousy team having a terrible season. Their offense is ranked 67th in the nation and their total defense is a ranked nearly last. The Thundering Herd is injury riddled and off to an 0-4 start, and I just can’t see them turning things around for tonight’s game in Memphis. Marshall has only covered the spread once in their last 11 games as a road dog. The Tigers have not been overly impressive this season either, but being in front of the home crowd will give them the advantage in this game.
Memphis has suffered a team tragedy with the shooting death of defensive lineman Taylor Bradford, and this will obviously create a somber atmosphere in the locker room. These types of losses often serve to fire a team up on the field, however, so I don’t expect this to cause a complete breakdown for the Tigers. Bradford was in his first year at Memphis as a transfer from Samford University and had yet to see playing time with the Tigers. Somber though the situation is, I expect the Memphis Tigers to set their grief aside and play tough to get the win and cover in this game. The Tigers have been ATS winners in five of their last six games, and will be again tonight.

Reason: Two maligned defenses take the field in this one so we'll expect them to do the unexpected and play a good game. Game here in 2005 ended up a 26-3 final. Memphis showed it can play some defense in its season-opener vs. Mississippi. Take this one UNDER the total.

Memphis Tigers - 2.5 over Marshall Thundering Herd

Marshall (0-4, allowing 41.8 ppg) may be missing up to five defensive starters (questionable) due to injuries. Memphis (1-3) won the last home meeting beating Marshall 26-3 in '05. Playing Tigers despite playing on short rest (last Thur.) will respond in memory of teammate Taylor Bradford, who was fatally shot Sunday night.

Memphis (1-3, 2-1 ATS) vs. Marshall (0-4, 0-3 ATS)
Memphis takes the field tonight for the third time in 11 days, and will do so with heavy hearts following the tragic shooting death of a teammate on Sunday night.
Tigers defensive lineman Taylor Bradford was shot and killed on campus Sunday night in what police classified as a targeted attack. The incident occurred just four days after Memphis blew a 31-6 halftime lead at Arkansas State and lost 35-31, covering as a six-point road underdog. The Tigers lost even though they didn’t commit a turnover and finished with a slight 395-389 edge in total offense.
Marshall has been idle since Sept. 22, when it traveled to Cincinnati and got whacked 40-14 as a 24-point road underdog. The Thundering Herd have now lost five consecutive games, and they’re 2-4 ATS in their last six lined contests.
These teams have met each of the past two years, with the host prevailing in a big way in each contest. In 2005, Memphis cruised 26-3 as a 10-point chalk, while Marshall scored some revenge with last year’s 41-27 rout as a 9½-point favorite.
Both teams have been dreadful on the defensive side of the football. Marshall is yielding 41.8 points and 447.5 yards per game, including 263 rushing yards per outing, while Memphis is surrendering 32 points and 414.2 yards per game (171.2 rushing ypg).
The Tigers have the clear edge on offense, especially in the running game, as they’re averaging 153.8 rushing ypg, compared with 84.8 rushing ypg for Marshall.
Memphis has lost 12 of its last 14 games, with the only victories coming against UTEP in last year’s season finale and Division I-AA Jackson State on Sept. 15. On the bright side, the Tigers are on a 5-1 ATS run. Also, the Tigers are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 conference home-openers.
Marshall is mired in a 10-26-1 ATS slump as a road underdog, including 2-6 ATS when catching points in a Conference USA road game.
The over is on runs of 10-1 for Marshall overall and 11-1 for Marshall in conference games. Meanwhile, Memphis has topped the total in its last two, snapping a 4-0 “under” streak.

(# 1) Bayatthemoon - Tactical speed and the hedge. She's as good as she's ever been and the level is fine. Will be involved in the race from the opening bell.
(# 3) Remberthecowgirl - Likes this particular distance (10-3-2-1) on turf which on the East Coast is unique to Philly Park. Likes to race just off the lead, a good place to be.

Memphis -3 over Marshall

The outcome of this game means absolutely nothing to the players at Memphis as they are grieving the loss of Defensive Linemen Taylor Bradford who was tragically murdered on Sunday Night. You know that this game is dedicated to him and lucky for Memphis they are playing a 0-4 Marshall team who cannot run the ball. If you cannot run the ball on the road you basically have no shot. The only bright spot this team had was a good first half of play against WVU at home, but since then we have found West Virginia is just not that good of a road team. Memphis has played in a few tough games and clearly has the strength of schedule. This team already went thru their preparations before Sunday nights tragedy so they all know their assignments. This team is playing for something much larger than a victory. Take Memphis.<!-- / message -->
