The day before a triple slaying was discovered in Verona in June, someone tried to transfer money from an offshore betting account of one of the victims to the credit card of the suspect, according to court documents unsealed Monday.

A search of suspect Meng Ju Wu's wallet also turned up six $100 bills, an amount consistent with what Wu told authorities Jason McGuigan commonly carried in his wallet.

Authorities say McGuigan was heavily involved in offshore betting and had helped Wu set up an offshore account to place bets. Wu told authorities he had lost $15,000 gambling between April and June, but bank records showed he had withdrawn $72,000 since December.

McGuigan, 28, Dustin Wilson, 17, and Daniel Swanson, 25, were found shot to death June 26 in an apartment in Verona. Wu, 19, was arrested in New York City July 6 after allegedly trying to flee to Taiwan. He had previously lived with relatives on the East Coast, where he attended high school, and he is now fighting extradition to Wisconsin.

According to a search warrant unsealed Monday, a call was placed to Olympic Sports, based in Montego Bay, Jamaica, on June 25. The caller used McGuigan's password to access his account and asked that the money in the account be transferred to Wu's credit card number. The Olympic Sports bookie turned down the caller, saying that the money had to remain on McGuigan's credit card, which was the one used to open the betting account.

Wu, a resident alien from Taiwan who was enrolled in the Asian studies program at UW-Madison, has been charged in Dane County with three counts of first-degree intentional homicide.
